There are essentially three kinds of hosting situations you can choose from.  The one you choose to employ depends on what you want your site to do and how much you are willing to pay for it.

The lowest cost approach is to find a reputable shared hosting provider.  These providers offer all of the things you will need to get your new site up and running in a very short time.  There are many companies on the net who provide these services.

The most expensive approach is to buy your own server and have it setup for only your site.  This requires a very high level of technical expertise which is very  expensive when compared to the alternatives.  There are many advantages with this approach such as increased security, priority processing, unlimited transfer rates and unlimited storage capacity to name a few. 

An excellent compromise between these two approaches is to rent a dedicated server from a hosting provider.  With this approach, you will have full control over the entire server and all of its resources.  The actual hardware will be managed by the hosting provider.  Some providers also offer virtual dedicated server plans which provide the benefits of dedicated servers at a fraction of their cost.  Although this eliminates the need for the acquisition of the technical talent required to setup the server it doesn't give you a website ready server like the one you will get with the shared server approach.  You will therefore still need a higher level of technical knowledge for this approach.
